The BMW 540i is especially hard on its cooling system. With the catalytic converters located in the exhaust manifolds, the engine compartment temperatures are sometimes higher than those of other vehicles. If you notice any coolant leaks, or are getting a low coolant message, do not ignore it. An overheated engine can lead to warped heads and/or block. Take care of your car and perform a full cooling system replacement when trouble arises. Often, once one plastic piece cracks, the others are not far behind. That is why we strongly recommend you replace all plastic pieces at the same time. The water pump, thermostat, and other pieces can be done at the same time or tackled as a separate job.
Please reference the table below for the cooling system parts required for your early model BMW E39 540i manufactured after 09/1998. If you need a list for a 540i manufactured thru 08/1998, please read this article.
The list is offered as a reference only. It is your responsibility to confirm all part numbers and their applicability to your car. EAC is not liable for any misinformation.
